How to Pay in El Salvador

Cash, cards and Bitcoin — what actually works, and where.

El Salvador uses the U.S. dollar, so travelers coming from the United States do not need to exchange currency. If your account is held in another currency, the exchange rate and fees will depend on your bank or card provider.

Cash is still essential

In markets, small restaurants, street vendors, towns and local shops, cash is usually the most practical option. Carry $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills, as many vendors do not have enough change for large denominations.

$50 and $100 bills can be used in supermarkets and larger establishments when the purchase amount is reasonable, but acceptance depends on the business. It is also advisable to carry bills in good condition, without tears or visible damage.

Credit and debit cards

Cards are widely used in supermarkets, hotels, shopping centers, restaurants and tourism businesses. However, some small establishments do not accept them or may apply an additional charge. Before traveling, check with your bank about international fees and travel notifications.

Although ATMs exist in the main cities, they may charge high fees or be temporarily out of service. For that reason, it is not wise to rely on them exclusively.

Bitcoin and digital payments

Bitcoin can be used in El Salvador, but only at businesses that voluntarily choose to accept it. Before making a purchase, ask whether the establishment accepts Bitcoin and confirm the network, the amount and the exchange rate shown in your wallet.

PayPal and international bank transfers are also available with certain hotels, tour operators and service providers, normally through prior coordination.

The simplest approach

The best recommendation is to combine a card with a moderate amount of cash in small bills, and to confirm any digital payment in advance. That way you can move from a local market to a hotel or a private experience without complications.
